My Philosophy

Music is a source of joy, healing, creativity, fun, and fulfillment. I love to share it with others through my teaching. I teach based on my students’ own interests while gently pushing them to stretch and grow!

To engage and stimulate your creativity, I take a holistic approach to teaching. Beyond just note reading, students find musical connections and work towards a complete understanding of the music they make. Lessons include ear training, music theory, improvisation, and composition, depending on the student.

My Experience

I have been teaching piano lessons since 2010 to students of all levels, ages, and with a variety of musical goals and aspirations. I have taught high school and college clinics in improvisation across the country, and I have worked as an individual and group instructor through Make Music NOLA, the People’s Music School in Chicago, and Expressions Music Academy in Michigan among others.

I studied jazz piano at Oberlin Conservatory, and I have experience across many musical styles as a performer, composer, teacher and student.

Josh is a very friendly and patient teacher and uses
positive reinforcement and encouragement to help my child build confidence in his piano skills. Allowing him to choose the songs he wants to learn based on the music he likes has helped to keep him motivated and engaged through zoom lessons. As a reward, Josh even composed a special song just for my son. He loved it!

I’ve enjoyed these lessons so much! I’ve learned a lot about music while having fun at the same time.

— Ami, Boston, age 16
A great teacher! Obviously great at the technical stuff but also great at talking about music and considering different vantage points, which is what makes the lessons especially rewarding for me.
— Joel, Atlanta, age 25
Flexibility is the name of the game in 2020 and something Josh excels at. Josh is known to take any song I’ve been drawn to that week and come up with a lesson for me on the spot that teaches theory through that specific song and turn every lesson into a progression. Coming from being taught traditionally through sight-reading as child, Josh has helped me rediscover and change the way I learn and relate to music.
